Keyboard shortcuts

Mempipe has five keyboard shortcuts of its own. ⌘K opens the command palette, ⌘\ and ⌘⇧\ show or hide the left and right panels, ⌘S saves the file you are editing, and ⌘+Enter runs a SQL query. On Windows and Linux, press Ctrl in place of ⌘. The app’s labels always show the Mac keys.

These work anywhere in a Space, even while you type in an editor.

Mac Windows and Linux What it does
⌘K Ctrl+K Open or close the command palette, to jump to a file or run a command
⌘\ Ctrl+\ Show or hide the left panel: Files, Search, and Pipeline
⌘⇧\ Ctrl+Shift+\ Show or hide the right panel: Inspector and Agent
Esc Esc Close the palette, a dialog, or a panel open over the page

The buttons at the top corners of the workspace also show and hide the panels. To resize a panel from the keyboard, press Tab until the line beside it is focused, then press ← or →. Find your way around a Space explains each part.

In the command palette, press ↑ and ↓ to move through the list, and Enter to open a file or run a command. Find a file by name shows how to use it.

These work while the cursor is in a file’s text, in its original view. On a Mac, press ⌘, not Ctrl.

Mac Windows and Linux What it does
⌘S Ctrl+S Save the file
⌘Z Ctrl+Z Undo
⌘⇧Z Ctrl+Y Redo
⌘F Ctrl+F Find and replace in the file
⌥↑ or ⌥↓ Alt+↑ or Alt+↓ Move the current line up or down
⌘] or ⌘[ Ctrl+] or Ctrl+[ Indent or outdent the current line

A file with unsaved changes shows • before its name in the tab. Tab doesn’t indent: it moves out of the editor. Write and edit Markdown notes covers editing and saving.

These work while the cursor is in a query, in the query view of a CSV, TSV, or .sql file, or in a query shown inside a note.

Mac Windows and Linux What it does
⌘+Enter Ctrl+Enter Run the query
⌘S Ctrl+S In a .sql file, save the query

⌘+Enter doesn’t run a .sql file in its original view. Switch to query first. Query CSV files with SQL explains the query view.

Keys What it does
Enter Send your message
Shift+Enter Start a new line

To stop an answer, choose the stop button. It has no shortcut. Ask the agent about your files covers the Agent tab.

Click in the file list first, or move to it with Tab.

Keys What it does
↑ or ↓ Move to the next or previous item
→ Open a folder, or move into an open one
← Close a folder, or move to its parent
Space Open the file, or open or close the folder
Home or End Move to the first or last item
Page Up or Page Down Move up or down by a screenful
* Open every folder at the same level as the current one
⌘↓ Open the file, on a Mac
Letters Move to the first item whose name starts with them

While you name a new folder or rename an item, press Enter to save the name or Esc to cancel. While you drag files over the list to upload them, press Esc to cancel.

Enter doesn’t open a file in the list. Press Space. Rename and Delete appear only when you point at a row, so they need a mouse or trackpad. Create folders and rename, move, or delete files shows them.

  • In the Search panel, press Enter in any box to run the search.
  • On the Space Activity and Search Index pages, press Enter in a filter box to apply the filters.
  • In the list on Space Activity, Search Index, or a file’s search-units view, ↑ and ↓ move from row to row and show each row’s details. Enter or Space shows the details of the row you’re on.

⌘-click a citation, or Ctrl-click on Windows and Linux, to open it in a new browser tab instead of in the Space. Open a citation and check its source explains citations.

  • Tabs. There is no shortcut to close or switch the tabs of open files. ⌘W, or Ctrl+W, closes the browser tab, not the file.
  • Saving outside an editor. ⌘S saves only while the cursor is in a file’s text or a query. Elsewhere, your browser handles it.
