Use Mempipe Notebook in ChatGPT

Mempipe Notebook is Mempipe’s app for ChatGPT. It opens your Mempipe files inside the chat. You can browse and search a Space, read a document beside the conversation, and check the files ChatGPT should start from. With write access, you can also add PDF, Markdown, and CSV files by dropping them on the app, or by asking ChatGPT to save a file you attached.

Mempipe Notebook is waiting for OpenAI’s review. It isn’t in ChatGPT’s app directory yet. Until it is, you add it yourself through ChatGPT’s custom MCP server setting, as described below. OpenAI describes that setting for developers testing their own apps, and your ChatGPT plan or workspace may not offer it.

  • A Mempipe account with a Space that has files in it. See Upload files to a Space.
  • ChatGPT on the web, at chatgpt.com. Mempipe has tested the notebook there. ChatGPT’s mobile apps can’t pass a file you attach in a chat on to Mempipe.
  • A ChatGPT plan or workspace that allows custom MCP servers. OpenAI’s account and workspace policies decide this. In a work or school workspace, an admin may have to allow it.

These steps follow OpenAI’s developer guide, Connect and test your plugin. OpenAI may change the labels; its guide has the current ones.

  1. Add a custom MCP server.

Open chatgpt.com/plugins. Choose the plus button, then Add custom MCP server. Name it Mempipe.

  2. Enter Mempipe’s address.

Under Connection, enter https://api.mempipe.ai/v1/mcp. For authentication, choose OAuth, so that ChatGPT signs you in to Mempipe. Read ChatGPT’s risk warning, choose I understand and want to continue, then Create as a plugin.

  3. Sign in to Mempipe and approve.

ChatGPT opens Mempipe so you can sign in. On Allow this client access to Mempipe?, check that it asks for every Space you belong to.

To add files from ChatGPT, tick Add, replace, and delete files in every Space you belong to, including Spaces you join later. Leave it unticked to only read. What a connected AI can read and change explains the choice. Then choose Approve access.

  4. Install it, and pick it in a new chat.

Install the new Mempipe plugin when ChatGPT offers it. Start a new chat, type @ in the message box, and choose Mempipe.

  5. Open the notebook.

    With Mempipe chosen, ask:

Open Mempipe so I can choose files for this chat.

ChatGPT opens Mempipe Notebook in the chat, on one of your Spaces.

  • The Space. The top left shows the organization and a list of your Spaces. Choose another Space there. Switching closes your open files and clears your choice of files.
  • Read only or Can add files. The top bar shows whether this connection can add files. Read only means you didn’t tick write access when you approved.
  • The plug. The switch at the top right turns Mempipe’s note to ChatGPT on and off. See Turn Mempipe’s context off.
  • Size. Buttons at the top right switch the notebook to Full screen or Picture in picture, and Show in conversation puts it back in the chat. Only the sizes you aren’t using are shown.
  • The side buttons. The icons down the left open Files, Search, and In this chat. Choosing the open one again hides the sidebar, to give the reader more room.

On a narrow window or a phone, the sidebar opens over the document. Choose the sidebar button, tap outside the sidebar, or open a file to close it.

  1. Open Files.

Files lists the Space’s files. Choose Folders to see them in folders, or Flat list to see every file at once. Type in Filter by name to narrow the list.

  2. Open a file.

Choose a file’s name. It opens in a tab on the right, and you can keep several tabs open. Hover a tab to see the file’s full path.

  3. Read it.

A PDF or Markdown file shows its text, with its figures named in place. Page buttons such as p.3 open that page of the original. Open source opens the file in Mempipe in your browser, and Copy source link copies its address.

A file that’s still being processed says Mempipe is still preparing it. New uploads usually finish within a minute; choose Try again. Files that aren’t documents, such as CSV files, show that they aren’t a readable document. Ask ChatGPT about them in the chat instead, which can read or query them.

The notebook opens Mempipe in your browser in a separate session. If Open source asks you to sign in, sign in to Mempipe there. Signing in to ChatGPT doesn’t sign you in to Mempipe in your browser.

Open Search, type words in Search inside files, and press Enter. Results are passages from the Space’s files, grouped by file and ranked by relevance. Choose a passage to open the file at that passage. Choose Next results for more.

Filter by name in Files matches file names only. To find words inside files, use Search.

Check the box at the right of a file to point ChatGPT at it. The box beside a folder chooses every file in it. In the reader, the Use in this chat box does the same for the open file.

Then ask your question in the chat. ChatGPT is asked to start from the files you chose, and it can still search the rest of the Space.

In this chat lists the files you chose, with Clear to remove them all. ChatGPT is told about up to 50 chosen items, and a whole folder counts as one. Choose whole folders to cover more files.

Your choice belongs to this notebook window. Opening Mempipe again in the same chat adds another window with its own choice, and both apply. Reloading a window keeps its Space, open tabs, and choice.

While the notebook is Plugged in, it adds a note about the Space and your chosen files to each message you send. ChatGPT shows that note as a Context chip above your message. The chip comes back after each message, even if you remove it.

To stop that, choose the plug at the top right. It changes to Unplugged, and Mempipe adds no note to your messages. Your choice of files stays, ready for when you plug back in. ChatGPT can still use Mempipe’s tools if you ask it to.

Unplugged lasts until you plug back in or reload the notebook. A reload plugs it back in.

If the plug shows Send failed, your latest choice didn’t reach ChatGPT. Open In this chat and choose Try again. If ChatGPT may still have the last note, the notebook says so. Remove the Context chip before you send.

You need write access to add files. If the notebook shows Read only, see If something goes wrong.

  1. Choose the files.

Drag PDF, Markdown, or CSV files onto the notebook, or choose Add files at the top of Files.

  2. Check the dialog.

A dialog lists each file with its type and size. Under Folder, choose where to save them. It starts at the folder of the file you have open, or Space root.

A file that can’t be added says why, such as a name already in that folder, or a type Mempipe doesn’t add. Change the name in the dialog to save it under another name.

  3. Save.

Choose Save file, or Save 3 files for three. Nothing is uploaded until you do. Each file shows Saving…, then Saved. Preparing it for reading and search…, then Ready.

Attach a PDF, Markdown, or CSV file to a message, then ask ChatGPT to save it:

Save this PDF to the raw folder of my Research Space in Mempipe.

ChatGPT saves it under its own name, at the top of the Space unless you name a folder. If a file with that name is already there, Mempipe refuses, and ChatGPT asks for another name. You can also ask ChatGPT to save a note from the conversation as a Markdown file.

ChatGPT may ask you before it saves, depending on its own settings. The notebook’s dialog always asks before it saves a dropped file.

Back in the notebook, the file list updates when you return to it.

The notebook has no delete button. To delete a file, ask ChatGPT, naming the Space and the file:

Delete notes/draft.md from my Research Space in Mempipe.

ChatGPT deletes one file at a time, of any type, PDFs included, but never a folder. There is no trash or undo. Mempipe stops searching and reading the file, but chats that already used its text keep what they read. ChatGPT may ask you to confirm first. You can also delete files in Mempipe.

  • The notebook shows Read only. You approved read access only, or you connected before write access was offered on 10 October 2026. The connection keeps the access you approved. Remove Mempipe from ChatGPT, add it again, and tick the write box when you approve. Then start a new chat.
  • There is no Add custom MCP server option. Your ChatGPT plan or workspace doesn’t allow custom MCP servers. In a work or school workspace, ask your admin. Otherwise, connect one Space in the ChatGPT desktop app, which can read files and save notes without the notebook.
  • ChatGPT answers without using Mempipe. Start a new chat, type @, and choose Mempipe before you ask.
  • ChatGPT says it can’t save files, but the notebook shows Can add files. ChatGPT may still have the older list of tools. Open the Mempipe connection at chatgpt.com/plugins, choose Refresh, then start a new chat.
  • ChatGPT on your phone can’t save an attachment. The mobile apps don’t pass attachments on. Attach the file in ChatGPT on the web.
  • The notebook shows an error instead of your files. Open it again in a new chat. If that fails too, remove Mempipe from ChatGPT and add it again, so you sign in to Mempipe afresh.
  • Search says it isn’t available for this Space yet. The Space has no search index yet. You can still open its files. See Search results are missing or out of date.
  • A file you chose isn’t in the list any more. It was deleted or moved. The notebook says it’s no longer chosen.

Still stuck? Email hello@mempipe.ai with the message ChatGPT or the notebook showed.

  • It has no link that reopens the notebook at a file. Copy source link opens the file in Mempipe in your browser instead.
  • It can’t delete, rename, or move files itself. Ask ChatGPT to delete one, or use Mempipe.
